UXO Detection

Geosoft has partnered with government agencies, environmental and survey contractors, and industry equipment suppliers to meet the unique and specialized needs of the international Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) community.

The detection and characterization of Unexploded Ordnance relies on data quality control and the ability to easily access and work with large volumes of data during each step of the investigation process: acquisition, quality control, processing, analysis and visualization.

Geosoft solutions support the effective planning and management of UXO projects, and enable effective quality control, quality assurance, target mapping and analysis.

The montaj UX-Detect extension provides unique capabilities for locating and analyzing UXO targets, based on magnetic (total field and gradiometer) or electromagnetic data (EM-61).

montaj UX-Detect

The montaj™ UX-Detect extension provides unique capabilities for locating and analyzing UXO targets, from magnetic (total field and gradiometer) or electromagnetic data (EM-61). It is used to quickly locate the ground position of potential UXO targets and narrow these selections to a final target list.

The extension provides the necessary tools for pre-processing large volume total field and 1VD magnetic survey data as well as EM61 survey data. These tools enable you to apply lag, heading, sensor offset and base station corrections to assure the quality of your UXO survey data. The extension also provides spatial, Non-linear, and vertical derivative filters to assist with signal-noise removal and enhancement of your data. Depth and size calculations help to further characterize UXO targets for informed decisions.

Anomalies in the data may be selected by an interpreter and analyzed for ordnance detection. The extension provides both an automatic target selection algorithm, as well as manual selection tools. Interactive target editing and grouping tools allow for final target list refinement. Map making tools enable the creation of UXO target maps for visualization and display of the target locations and reporting.

Use montaj UX-Detect to:

  • Create an analytic signal grid from magnetic data to position positive peaks over the center or edges of potential UXO targets

  • Apply spatial filters to smooth profile and gridded data

  • Apply 1D Non-Linear Filter to remove very short wavelength, but high amplitude features from data

  • Automatically locate targets from both magnetic and EM data

  • Interactively select targets from profiles and grids

  • Interactively move, merge, and/or remove targets from maps

  • Measure the anomaly size by calculating the distance from the peak of an anomaly to it's first inflection point

  • Apply 2D Euler deconvolution tool to calculate the apparent depths of selected magnetic targets

  • Calculate the depth to source from a ratio of responses from the top and bottom EM coils

  • Apply lag, heading, sensor offset, and base station corrections to help remove unwanted signal from data

  • Create an audit log to track all data processing as a historical archive record
